Surgery

Precision, experience, and honest communication at every stage

Surgery is a significant decision for any horse owner. At Performance Equine Specialists, our goal is to make that decision easier through clear explanations, careful preparation, and proven skill.

“At every level, we lead with integrity. If a horse cannot compete safely, we say so. If there is a fix, we make it happen the right way. That is what our clients expect.”
Dr. Ellis Farstvedt

Specialty Surgical Services

Orthopedic and Joint Surgery

  • Arthroscopy for joint repair and chip removal
  • Fracture stabilization and internal fixation
  • Joint fusion procedures

Soft-Tissue and Airway Surgery

  • Upper airway repair for performance horses
  • Sinus and nasal procedures
  • Laparoscopic surgery for abdominal or reproductive conditions

General Surgery

Every surgical case is evaluated individually. If surgery is not the best option, we recommend medical or rehabilitative alternatives that better suit the horse and situation.

Pre-Surgical Evaluation

Surgical success begins with preparation. We never operate without understanding what we are treating.

  • Full clinical and pre-surgical exams
  • Digital Radiography and Ultrasound to assess the condition
  • Laboratory work to confirm anesthesia safety when indicated
  • Honest, clear discussions with owners about risk, recovery, and cost
“Good surgery begins long before the first incision. It starts with knowing exactly what you are fixing and why.”

Post-Operative Care and Recovery

Recovery is tailored to each horse’s age, job, and temperament. Our team provides:

  • Pain management and wound monitoring
  • Rehabilitation protocols in collaboration with Regenerative Medicine and Sports Medicine
  • Ongoing communication with referring veterinarians, trainers, and farriers
“Recovery is not just about the surgery. It is about how well the team works together afterward.”
Dr. Ellis Farstvedt

We view follow-up care as part of the surgical process, not an afterthought.

Referral Partnerships

Dr. Farstvedt actively collaborates with veterinary practices throughout Montana, Arizona, and Alaska. We welcome elective surgical referrals and are committed to open, respectful communication with referring DVMs.

“Good veterinary medicine is not a competition. It is a collaboration. When vets work together, horses win.”
Dr. Ellis Farstvedt

Our surgical services are designed to complement, not replace, the work of primary veterinarians.
