Regenerative Medicine
Healing through biology, not hype
At Performance Equine Specialists, regenerative medicine is not a trend or a buzzword. It is a way to help the body repair itself using its own natural resources. Every treatment plan begins with a diagnosis and is guided by what will most effectively restore comfort and soundness for the horse.
“Regenerative therapy isn’t about trends. It’s about biology, helping the body repair itself in the most natural way possible.”
Dr. Ellis Farstvedt
The Purpose of Regenerative Therapy
Performance horses work hard. Over time, tendons, ligaments, and joints accumulate micro-injuries that can reduce performance or cause chronic pain. Regenerative therapies use the horse’s own cells and proteins to promote real healing instead of masking the issue.
These therapies are not used routinely. They are applied selectively, only when they are appropriate for a specific condition. Every recommendation follows a full clinical exam and often Diagnostic Imaging to identify the actual source of pain.
“We start by asking what the problem really is. If we cannot answer that first, no injection or therapy will fix it.”
Dr. Ellis Farstvedt
Platelet-Rich Plasma, PRP
PRP is one of the most commonly used regenerative tools in the Performance Equine Specialists toolbox. A sample of the horse’s blood is processed to concentrate platelets and growth factors. That solution is then injected directly into the affected tissue.
PRP is designed to accelerate the body’s repair process. It is most often used for:
- Tendon and ligament injuries
- Soft tissue strain
- Joint inflammation and damage
Alpha-2 Macroglobulin, A2M
A2M is a protein that helps protect cartilage by neutralizing destructive enzymes inside joints. It can be a strong option for:
- Joint inflammation
- Early degenerative joint disease
- Cases where preservation is the priority
By targeting and removing the enzymes that break down cartilage, A2M can help extend a joint’s functional lifespan.
Stem-Cell and Plasma-Based Therapies
In more complex or chronic cases, stem-cell and plasma-based therapies may be used. These therapies stimulate new tissue growth, reduce inflammation, and support healing at the cellular level.
They are best suited for:
- Advanced soft tissue injuries
- Delayed healing
- Chronic inflammatory conditions
How We Decide What to Use
Every regenerative case begins with accurate diagnosis and honest communication. The process includes:
- Confirmation of the issue through hands-on evaluation and imaging
- Evaluation of whether regenerative therapy is the best fit
- Full discussion of cost, timeline, and realistic outcomes
“Regenerative therapies are one more tool in the box. They are not a magic fix, but they are valuable when used for the right case.”

Integrated Recovery Plans
Every treatment is supported by a practical recovery plan. We work with farriers, trainers, and referring veterinarians to align rehabilitation with the horse’s environment, schedule, and job.
“Good veterinary medicine isn’t a competition. It’s a collaboration. When vets work together, horses win.”
Dr. Ellis Farstvedt
That collaboration ensures horses receive the care and time they need with no rushing, no guesswork.
Realistic Results and Honest Guidance
Regenerative medicine can offer excellent outcomes, but it is not a miracle. Dr. Farstvedt is known for his honest evaluations and realistic recommendations.
Some horses return to competition. Some return to light riding. Others may need retirement. The goal is always a recovery plan that puts the horse’s well-being first.
“We will deliver bad news if that is what is honest. We would rather tell the truth than say what is easy. That is what builds trust.”
