Diagnostic Imaging

The foundation of accurate answers

At Performance Equine Specialists, every diagnosis begins with a clear picture, literally. Modern imaging technology allows us to identify the source of pain or limitation with precision, which means we can plan the right treatment instead of relying on guesswork.

“Computer technology changed everything, especially image quality. MRI, CT, radiographs, ultrasounds… the detail we get now is astronomical.”
Dr. Ellis Farstvedt

Imaging is not a side service here. It is the foundation of how we practice equine sports medicine.

Why Imaging Matters

Every soundness or performance issue has a cause. Sometimes it is obvious. Often, it is hidden deep within tissue or bone. High-quality imaging helps us see exactly what the horse is feeling so we can treat the problem, not just the symptoms.

“The image only tells part of the story. You still have to look at the horse, the whole horse.”
Dr. Ellis Farstvedt

At Performance Equine Specialists, imaging is never done in isolation. We combine it with gait evaluation, palpation, and a full physical exam to create a complete clinical picture. For examples of how imaging supports treatment, visit the Sports Medicine and Lameness page.

Digital Radiography (DR)

Our DR systems, Sound and Eklin, produce crisp, high-resolution radiographs instantly. These allow for quick decision-making and clear communication.

  • Adjusted exposure for each individual horse
  • On-the-spot image review and case planning
  • Rapid sharing with trainers, owners, and referring vets

Radiography is the standard for identifying joint changes, fractures, and hoof balance issues.

Digital Ultrasound

Ultrasound is essential for evaluating soft tissues like tendons and ligaments. It helps diagnose strain, monitor recovery, and guide regenerative treatment.

  • Portable units used on-site or in-clinic
  • High-detail imaging for targeted assessment
  • Often paired with Regenerative Medicine therapies for healing support

Ultrasound gives us insight into injuries that are invisible to radiographs.

Endoscopy and Gastroscopy

Airway Endoscopy

  • Evaluates trachea and upper airway
  • Detects conditions that impair breathing or stamina

Gastroscopy

  • Identifies ulcers and gastric inflammation
  • Helps plan treatment for horses with stress-related digestive issues

Both procedures are minimally invasive, done with sedation, and reviewed with the client in real-time.

MRI and CT Referrals

Some cases require imaging beyond our mobile systems. We partner with referral centers to access:

  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging, MRI
  • Computed Tomography, CT

Dr. Farstvedt personally reviews and interprets results in the context of each horse’s unique clinical case.

“Technology is powerful, but it is still the vet’s job to connect what the screen shows with what the horse is telling you.”
Dr. Ellis Farstvedt

Communication and Case Sharing

We ensure every client and referring veterinarian receives complete diagnostic information, including:

  • Digital images
  • Written findings and reports
  • Verbal case updates and collaborative planning

This clarity helps everyone involved, including the owner, trainer, and vet, move forward with aligned goals. For treatment options that follow imaging, visit the Regenerative Medicine page.
